Posted by: McQ on Tuesday, August 07, 2007 The New York Times, per reports, is going to end its experiment of charging for on-line content in its "Times Select" subscription (as Dale predicted some time ago): The New York Times is poised to stop charging readers for online access to its Op-Ed columnists and other content, The Post has learned.I remember how Jon used to smack Krugman around on an almost weekly basis when his op/eds were available at no charge. And it generated conversation, debate and, obviously, readers for the on-line version of the NYT. Multiply that across the political blogosphere and you have thousands clicking through to read the whole editorial and, as usually happens, checking out the advertising on the page. By putting Krugman and Friedman behind the Times Select wall, the NYT killed all of that, essentially limiting themselves to click throughs by their 221,000 subscribers to the service. While Krugman and Friedman were good blog fodder, there were substitutes available and bloggers simply switched their focus and left the Times editorialists to preach to the subscribers. It doesn't seem to have worked out as the Times imagined it might. A little lesson in arrogance and a nice slice of humble pie seem to be the result. So? So, I look forward to Jon once again, and with relish, smacking Krugman around. It is a thing of beauty and something worth checking for at QandO on a regular basis. |
