"He’s too late!"
"His campaign is in disarray!!"
"Announcing on Leno? He’s not serious enough!"
I’ve been reading that stuff for days. Professional politicos and journalists seem to exaggerate both highs and lows.
I don’t think the waiting will hurt Fred a bit. All he has to do it trot out one of his disarming explanations. Something like "I wanted to spare our poor voters all those extra months of campaign commercials they weren’t ready to watch."
As for announcing on Leno, it’s clear he’s running a completely different type of campaign, and basing a lot of it on his demeanor and name recognition. It seems like the perfect venue to me. He’s trying to reach Joe Voter, not Polly Politico.
I don’t know what to think about the campaign organization shuffles. But the harping on it looks like over-reaction to me. I would have thought by now Republican strategists would have been looking for someone who insists on getting his staff right before the $#!+ hits the fan. Goodness knows Bush has not shown any particular talent at assembling a staff. |

The best answer to whether the staff shuffling was a plus or minus is to look at the changes made. Were they upgrades or downgrades? I have yet to hear anyone question the abilities of any of the replacements or suggest that they were a poorer choice than the people they replaced. |

It is 14 months from the election. The idea he was waiting too long is silly, most voters don’t focus until now (even in NH and Iowa — though as a caucus state Iowa probably gives the biggest bonus to people who spend loads of time there). If he runs a solid campaign, he can easily swing voters to his side and may quickly become the front runner. If he has a series of missteps, he’ll be another "looked better as an outsider" candidate. His best strategy is to focus on South Carolina and southern white voters first, and then once he gets the conservative core of the party to ditch Romney (Mormon who flip flops on social issues) and Guiliani (where to begin?), then veer towards the center and have a populist (whatever the definition) appeal like Reagan did.
One reason it might be good if he succeeds is it will send a message that it’s a waste of time to be debating and campaigning two years before an election! |

It wasn’t when he joined thats an issue. The start dates for when campaigning should be is still too soon.
Its how long he teased the public before actually declaring. He milked that in between state. He’s tried to upstage the debate several times. Its getting annoying.
Meanwhile we don’t get hardly anything about where Fred stands on issues. The only thing I know is he’s a decent communicator and knows the value of communicating. That’s incredibly attractive considering how BS accusations have gained credibility with the current administration due to delayed and inadequate responses. However, that’s not enough. Hopefully we’ll start learning more. |
