McQ, I take it neither you nor Clarke have been near a SE Asian recently. It would take a lot more for OBL to blend in there than just shaving his beard. For one thing, Arabs and SE Asians have very little in common in standard ethnic features—skin tone, facial features, etc. And SE Asians tend to be short, whereas OBL is supposed to be extremely tall. He’d have to chop himself off at the knees to blend in.

I wouldn’t discard the false beard idea entirely. Most westernized Pakistanis shave; if he was trying to go under the radar in Islamabad or Karachi-or in India, for that matter, since there still is a significant Muslim population in India—shaving off the beard would be a natural.

I don’t think it is a matter of "blending in", instead its a matter of not standing out. While he’ll always be a foreigner, he won’t be "the foreigner with the beard". They’re more likely to ignore the former and remember the later.

Actually, I think it’s more to the point that they will remember the foreigner who’s several inches taller than the average Indonesian; almost a full foot taller if he is actually 6’4". The Indonesians I have met seem to average about 5"7. People tend to remember that sort of difference.

And, as I said in my other comment, a shaved beard would be just as suitable in the more westernized parts of Pakistan, in the Muslim areas of India, or (for that matter) Egypt and Syria.
