KDKA contacted Congressman Jason Altmire [D-PA 04] on his behalf. He says he has proposed a bill that would guarantee soldiers receive full benefit of bonuses. I think very few conservative would have a problem supporting this Congressman on this issue. |

Who do we write? How do we get this changed? Who is the culprit that we pillory?

At the risk of seeming insensitive and uncaring, I would like to point out, as others have in similar cases, that these are the same people who will be in charge of approving who is eligible for government run health care. I know it is repetitious, but I think it needs to be repeated as often as necessary. |

I’ve screwed with more than a few times by military finance offices. It got worse when they civilianized most of the slots. Finance soldiers are usually pretty understanding but the civilians are just watching the clock and don’t give a crap. Let me qualify that by saying Not All civilian employees are like that but it seems like about 3 out of 4 are just there to collect a check. |

About the civilians, Bob. I wonder if retired military are the same or if they "get it" better.
In all honesty, learning the system and the rules and how to accomplish what needs to be accomplished is sort of an art form. (There’s always a few people in a unit who don’t seem to be able to catch on enough to function while there are also a few other people in the unit who seem to be able to bend the military to their will.)
In any case, my limited experience mirrors yours. Getting a civilian employee to fix something is sort of a crap shoot. |

I was told by several Dept of the Army Civilians that no soldiers are "forced" off active duty due to injuries. They can choose to finish out their enlistment no matter what injury they have. They also stated that if story is in fact true then it was most likely the ones who chose to leave voluntarily that received the letters.
A. Again I am going on heresay. I have no facts to back up either story other than what I have read or heard. Maybe someone with connections can further check out or clarify the validity of the above statement.
B. Either way, if this story is accurate than I still think someone should get fired regardless whether a soldier left voluntarily or not due to injuries.
I am somewhat of a skeptic on almost any story I see in print today especially about the war. My instinct is that the reporters automatically slat the story in the worst possible way to make the military and the administration look as bad as they possibly can.

If the difference is a desk-job until the end of enlistment in order not to have to pay back the bonus then... well... it’s got to be understood and included in whatever career counseling and medical discharge processing happens. And the degree of being disabled is probably important as well. What are the rules about getting medical discharges? We mostly hear about those people who fight to stay in the service despite being blind or having lost arms or legs. |

As for the validity of this problem,
one soldier facing this issue, would be too many, however, at last round-up According to the Defense Finance and Accounting Service,
EACH MONTH: from October 2005 through October of 2006, at least 600 members of the military and as many as 1,100 have owed bonus debts totaling anywhere from $2.5 million dollars each month to $4 million.
THERE are MANY PROBLEMS WITH THE DOD AND WITH THE VA...BUT COMPLAINING ABOUT IT WILL DO LITTLE...TODAY ON THIS THANKSGIVING CONSIDER CALLING YOUR CONGRESS, OR CONSIDER VOLUNTEERING YOUR TIME, VISIT A VET, LEND A HAND, WRITE A LETTER AND BE THANKFUL YOU ARE NOT BEING SHOT AT!!!!!
