Most guys who go AWOL are eventually chaptered out, either under the original AWOL charges or patterns of misconduct. (IANAL, but I see a lot of the paperwork and this stuff is pretty routine with young guys who make stupid decisions.)
Here are the regs on separations. He’d probably get a chapter 14.

Mine is so atrocious (I think my burgeoning arthritis is caused by the knuckle cracks I got from the nuns during penmenship study) I once had a woman at the county tax office tell me I had to re-write the check I had just written because she couldn’t READ the written version of the amount.....
I wanted to tell her I was a doctor, and that was as good as it was going to get. |

Penmanship is never too good when you are using your leg as a desk. Some of them seem fairly tight at the top, but progressively looser further down the page. ’Course my handwriting is generally a straight line with some jags in it, probably more legible upside down.
I’ve yet to see anything supporting Beauchamp’s version. |

As was suggested in the comments on Bob Owens’ post, it would have been nice if they had been asked and had addressed if any in his unit had ever confirmed his story as was put forth by TNR. I guess I would just liked another nail placed in TNR’s coffin. I have never quite recovered from my disgust with the media during and immediately after Vietnam. As far as I am concerned, any media outlet that performs that type of disservice to our military deserves to be driven from profitability. Printing, as Michael Yon says, the good, the bad and the ugly is fine as long as it is the truth! |

At least they can write. Think what it was like before the volunteer army with its higher standards. My handwriting was worse than these until I took a drafting class. Now I print everything. I have actually seen worse when I was grading math homework in college. There was one student whose writing was so bad even his name was illegible. I think it had four letters, but I am still not even sure of that. |
