Those who assume that all Republicans or all conservatives are thoroughly disgusted with George W. Bush are badly mistaken.
It certainly is true that Dubya’s negatives have risen since the 2000 campaign. It’s also true that among his base, some of his decisions (e.g., pushing comprehensive immigration reform without first securing the borders) and non-decisions (failing to use his veto to restrain congressional overspending) were disappointing.
But Dubya still has his fans. I’m one.
Most of them will end up voting for McCain, if he doesn’t go out of his way to insult them. It was a good idea for McCain to pay this courtesy call on the sitting president who (1) is the nominal leader of the party whose nomination you’ve just clinched and (2) won the largest number of popular votes of any candidate in American history just three years ago. |

Listen, by October, after voters have had a long summer with the candidates, George Bush nostalgia might kick in and McCain will want him in close states.
Bush’s numbers have been down for so long that he’s due for a rebound. I’ve gotten over the immigration thing, for instance.
Hey, how about a third term to fullfill the paranoid fantasies of the nutroots? |

However, it is amusing to watch McCain speak nicely of a guy he’s been so hostile to before now... |
