Yeah, well, you’d expect this kinda sludge from Greenwald. We saw this kind of defense for Clinton, and still do from these people. Kos, too, as I noted earlier this morning.
But postulate a Republican being caught out in something like this. Would the reaction from Greenwald and the kossacks, and so on, be the same? Would their defense be quite so strong?
OK, you can stop laughing, now.

Of course, Greenwald neglects to mention that, until he was caught using prostitutes, Spitzer himself "care[d] if an adult who isn’t their spouse hires prostitutes." Maybe he was just out to squish the competition.

[A]re there actually many people left who care if an adult who isn’t their spouse hires prostitutes? Are there really people left who think that doing so should be a crime, that adults who hire other consenting adults for sex should be convicted and go to prison Good! So Sens. Craig and Vitter are good to go right? Hell, Craig didn’t even hire anyone, he was looking for consensual!

Actually, the "need" to criminalize prostitution is one of those rare worldviews that unites radical conservatives ("morals," "social fabric," etc.) with radical liberals ("oppression of women," "the powerful exploiting the powerless," etc.).
While the Vast Center-Wing Conspiracy just shrugs it off.
Just saying... |

Greenwald’s second update:UPDATE II: Harper’s Scott Horton, one of the country’s foremost experts on the Bush DOJ’s overtly political prosecution of former Democratic Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman, compiles numerous additional questions regarding this quite unusual, massive federal law enforcement effort directed at a small prostitution ring that just so happens to have had Democratic New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer as a client (leading, in turn, to the disclosure of all sorts of salacious details in the "Client-9" paragraphs of the Complaint having no bearing whatsoever on the actual criminal issues). Yeah, those pesky Bushs, making Spitzer’s bank suspicious so they would report him.
Are those poor, innocent, small-time INTERNATIONAL prostitution-ring managers. They are being pursecuted...
*rolls his eyes*
Are we sure Greenwald isn’t a plant? That he’s not really a massive conservative out to merely make the left look retarded? |

Are there really people left who think that doing so should be a crime, that adults who hire other consenting adults for [running the NYSE] should be [prosecuted]? Spitzer demagogued Ken Langone and others on the Dick (heh) Grasso compensation committee to excessive pay. Consenting adults - all financially sophisticated - were castigated by Spitzer and his minions for much much less.

It’s that nasty little law about structuring financial transactions to avoid reporting requirements that will do the Governor in. He’s a former Attorney General. He knows there’s no "except if the money is used to pay hookers" clause in the law.
I think a deal for resignation and his law license for a plea to a felony with no time served is fair. |
