Pre-emptive strike, given what happened to his former boss, what’s been happening with Detroit’s mayor, and the McGreevey thing.
But you know, there seems something of a pattern, here, that I can’t quite put my finger on...

Not a week. less than a day. The revalation by David Paterson come the same day he assumed office. As for denial, it would have been pointless. Paterson appears to have made little, if any effort, to hide the affair. He used the same hotel his legislatives aides used and the same hotel to which he later took his wife.
Sadly as a New Yorker, it appears our politicians set very low standards, but then fail to meet them. |

Sex between consenting adults is very popular. It is those who squeal like stuck pigs at the mention of any revelation of extramarital coitus who are the problem.
By over-reacting to any salacious tidbit, the Press and public (also known by those in power as, "The Sheeple") give great power to anyone in opposition parties or with special interests at odds to those currently in power.
Just as homosexuals disarmed most of their enemies by decriminalizing their sexual preference, and by openly admitting their sexual orientation, heterosexuals, can disarm those moronic keyhole peeking members of the "watcher class." The watcher class includes law enforcement, private "security" firms, the Press and all of those who spend their time using surveillance devices, cameras, etc. to record the actions of others, rather than having lives of their own.
By coming out and admitting that, at least for a while, he had an "open marriage" Governor Patterson disarms those who were so giddy in anticipation of using this against him.
It is time for America to grow-up and admit that consensual sex between adults has gone on throughout human existence and that such relationships, in most instances, are not home wrecking events, or otherwise deleterious to society. We should also provide license to the "world’s oldest profession" closely regulating and taxing this activity to ensure the safety and health of clients and providers. It should be no different for a man or woman to employ a sex therapist, as one would hire a Physical Therapist, Chiropractor, or other allied health provider.
By taking away the stigma, we take away the power of those in the secret police and others in the "watcher class" to extort us into silence, or worse. |

Frankly, I like it when public officials are honest and open about such things, given the atmosphere these days. There’s something refreshing about it...assuming he’s telling the truth. |

A sad state of affairs indeed (no pun intended). Reminds me of the obligatory "I smoked pot" disclosure by Dem candidates in the early 90s. The disclosure immediately followed one’s declaration of candidacy. The assumption was that everyone cared. We don’t. |

I’m sorry. I thought that when you said "forsaking all others" during the marriage, you were supposed to mean it.
Are you really endorsing such feckless behavior as cheating on your spose?
While Patterson might be an open and honest man, he’s also a man that had just proven he’s without a solid moral compass. |

J. Tyler, this isn’t just about "Sex between consenting adults". It is about making a commitment and keeping it. They aren’t talking about having an ’open marriage’, but rather about how, during a ’difficult time’ they each had affairs with others.
Kudo’s to them for admitting it and avoiding the future ’bombshell’, but come on, what is up with NY and NJ politico’s? It is time for America to grow-up and admit that consensual sex between adults has gone on throughout human existence and that such relationships, in most instances, are not home wrecking events Please. This is just silly. You equate consensual sex between two people to be the same as a man having sex with a woman (consensually) without the CONSENT of his wife (or vice versa). That generally leads to wrecked homes, and kids with issues.
I’m all for people having he freedom to do whatever they wish behind closed doors, but unless you agreed in your wedding vows that you could bang anyone you want, and are OK with your spouse doing so as well, then the question here is what exactly did you commit to? |

I’m sorry. I thought that when you said "forsaking all others" during the marriage, you were supposed to mean it Indeed. And so, by extension, when they swear to uphold the constitution, or that they’re going to (X,y,z) on what basis do we assume they’re going to take such a promise any more seriously than they took the very personal one about marriage?

I don’t think Spitzer was a good member of Team Clinton. Let me put on a tin foil hat for a moment.
1) Hillary’s campaign probably believe she jumped the shark when she couldn’t give a straight answer as to whether she was for or against driver’s licenses for illegal aliens. Although the national media quieted down about the issue somewhat, it was pending in New York it was probably a constant sticking point for Hillary. New York being he home state with a substantial number of delegates. But Hillary probably doesn’t put the blame on herself. She probably put the blame onto Spitzer for putting her in that perdiciment in an election year in the first place followed by being late bailing her out by pulling the proposal.
2) I believe Spitzer ultimately endorsed Hillary after initially seeming to support Obama. It seemed reluctant.
3) The New York Primary was on the first week of February. Whether Spitzer was determined not to be a good member of Team Clinton or refused an offer he shouldn’t have, the consequences may have been triggered in January. Spitzer was ratted out in January, by coincidence.
Perhaps there’s some paranoia on Patterson’s part, justified or not, about how Spitzer was outted.
Regardless, perhaps he wanted to diffuse an issue while it was overshadowed by Spitzer for minimum impact and getting it out of the way so it didn’t hang over his head forever. |

I think there is a difference between a couple that decides to have a so-called open marriage, and one where one cheats on the other. The former is simply the two agreeing that sex outside the marriage is not a betrayal of their marraige vows, they redefine for themselves the role of sex in their marriage. I’d never be comfortable doing that, but if some people are, that’s fine. The latter is simply betraying someone and not being honest and that’s a sign of poor character. |

I think there is a difference between a couple that decides to have a so-called open marriage, and one where one cheats on the other. Leaving aside all the other arguments that leap to mind... we should perhaps start with context.... Was that what was happening with Patterson? I tend to think not, based on the description. |

If they lied to the one they promised to love and cherish, forsaking all others, they will certainly lie to you and me. That is the only reason to care. |

It’s obviously okay for some politicians to lie to us, just not others. Likewise, lies told by pols we like are minor, while purported lies by pols we don’t like are cause for running them out of office and at the very least imprisoning them if only because we can’t draw and quarter them. Understanding this will make it easier to understand comments about pols and lies. |

Some have missed the point. Sure we would prefer everyone to keep their vows in marriage and keep their other promises, as well.
However, in reality, where most of us still have to live each day, both men and women stray into extra-marital affairs. Some, like Jimmy Carter, just think about it a lot, while others give in and enjoy themselves, usually for a brief tryst that has no impact on their marriage.
If we can de-stigmatize consensual sex between adults, we take away power from those who spy on us and our elected leaders, and diminish the power held by those who use threats of exposing affairs or other sexual liaisons, to extort our elected leaders into betraying the citizens.
If we just take the grown-up approach and acknowledge that adults sometimes stray from marriage, (but most return) then we can end the power that the extortionists have over us and perhaps take away much of the incentive for those creepy people in the "watcher class" from peeking through our bedroom keyholes.
