"Fallen Heroes" in Obama audience?
Posted by: McQ on Tuesday, May 27, 2008

Powerline brings us this quote from Barack Obama during a speech in New Mexico about Memorial Day:
On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroesand I see many of them in the audience here today — our sense of patriotism is particularly strong.
Huh. So, anyone, does Mr. Obama even know what a "fallen hero" is?

Sometimes it is better to stick to the script and not ad lib, isn't it? I've noticed that when Obama reads what he's told to read, he does it powerfully and well. But when he gets off-script, he has a tendency to say things which at best sound odd and at worst sound ignorant, naive or foolish.

Of course all pols say things like this from time to time, but in Obama's case, these sorts of utterances seem to be increasing and only reinforcing the growing belief that he's not really ready for prime-time.

Powerline also makes the case that, as is usual for Democrats, the rest of Obama's speech casts our service men and women not in the light of heroes, but victims, which of course afforded Obama the opportunity to politicize the observance.

I wonder what the "fallen heroes" in the audience thought of that?

Clearly, Obama is seeing the ghosts of the fallen.

Which, of course, leaves open a question scholars will debate for centuries... are they there to haunt him, or support him?

It’s also an unwieldy sentence. What does "unbroken line of fallen heroes" mean? It sounds like all our service men and women have been killed.

We saw the same thing with Gore. He was rather prone to ridiculous gaffes.

But his shining Democratic armor shields him from gaining a reputation for them, and Obama has inherited that armor. Bush and Quayle didn’t have it, of course, so their gaffes expose them as incompetent boobs.

And there are still those who claim the mainstream media is not biased.

That doesn’t bode well for his performance during the debates.

Being that Obama is from Chicago, isn’t it obvious that they are already supporting him.

"our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes..."

Could it be that the ones who were there at the event make up part of "our nation" that paused to honor the fallen heroes? You blog well. But I suspect you are not a public speaker. Yes, Obama should stick to the script. But you should review the video and see the context of the speech in order to be fair.

I think he meant "unbroken line of fallen voters." He’s from Chicago, where the dead vote, but never Republican.

That is what you get from reading Obama’s website where his staff airbrushed the original quote.

Originally the quote was this:
On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes — and I see many of them in the audience here today — our sense of patriotism is particularly strong.
So unless he sees dead people then I think the post is dead on.

It could be, however if that’s really a stretch to believe he was talking about "many" of "our nation" in the audience, since, one assumes, the audience would have been made up completely of "our nation".
But I suspect you are not a public speaker.
Well, you’d be incorrect to suspect that.
But you should review the video and see the context of the speech in order to be fair.
I think I’ve been very fair. No one disputes the words, and to believe the possibility you present, one would have to acknowledge an extremely tortured interpretation of that sentence.

It is possible he meant to acknowledge military members of the audience, however, that’s not what he said. And that’s the point of the post.

He has to mean the ’fallen’ heros in the audience(so presumably he thinks fallen hero is a term that applies to all veterans)....the only alterntaive is he believes his audience is not in fact composed of members of his nation....and he’s had to single out the members of his nation by noting that ’many’ of them are in the audience today.

If members of his nation aren’t what his audience is mostly made up of, who are the OTHER members of his audience that he sees? Body Thetans?

Let’s see, 57 states, 10,000 dead in the storms, fallen heros in his audience, he’s getting quite good isn’t he?

I think that once you’ve been to an American university, unless you came in with a very adult outlook, that you remain in an institutionally- and self-induced state of quasi-delusion about reality at least until you’re out on your first serious job.

If you stay inside the academic world, the chances are very good that you never break out of it. If you go "out there" and do some sort of "activist" or "community organizer" role playing (where I imagine you try to distill the radical agenda learned at the university into a half page of key phrases) and then jump into politics, the odds against breaking out are worse than in the academy.

I’ve known people who could talk your head off your neck, but if you press them with this or that question, the whole act just falls apart, but only for a moment. The deal is always to keep on talking, just keep on talking.

And stick to the basics of "Hope" and "Change."

If Dan Quayle had seen fallen heroes in an audience Al Franken would have made it the title of a book.

Don’t know. Clearly he said what he said (well, except on his website where that ad lib has been excluded from his "official" version of the speech).

Well, that brings up another thing, Bruce, that both explains this gaffe and many others, and raises serious questions about Obama’s fitness for the office;

When he moves away from the prepared script, and tries to think for himself, he comes up with gems like this one. This is harldy the only time; we ahve a very well established pattern, that continues to develop in the same direction... He’s been giving the same speech with minor adjustments since day one, giving talks several times per day. Being in practice for public speaking, isn’t an issue.... not even close. Yet even minor divergence from the prepared script so as to play to the crowd, he reveals a scatterbrained side.
Every.
Single.
Time.

Doesn’t that give anyone pause over what constitutes his thinking ability... his ability to think on his feet and keep his thoughts in line, while under pressure? If he can’t keep his act together under the relatively minor pressure of a freindly crowd who came to hear him, how will he fare under the pressure of the office of POTUS?

Not well, I fear.

To an anti-war peace creep, all veterans are "fallen heroes" because of the horrible victimization inflicted upon them by the bushmaster regime. Which they were fooled into volunteering for by the evil mind control rays from the orbiting chimpler mchalliburton satellites.

I think it’s pretty obvious that he was referring only to the word "heroes" when he said he saw them in the audience. Clearly he doesn’t think he sees dead people and he certainly understands the meaning of "fallen hero." It was just a phrasing mistake. It happens to people from time to time. In Obama’s case, it’s pretty hard to argue that this reflects negatively on his intelligence since he shows consistently that he is extremely intelligent. It would be like trying to argue that Florida has a cold climate based on one weird chilly day.

I saw Obama speak at Wesleyan’s commencement last week. He was standing in for Ted Kennedy so he didn’t have much time to prepare, and since it wasn’t a campaign speech, the subject matter was different from many of the speeches he gives. He delivered a brilliant speech flawlessly, complete with wit and ad libs. If you listen to his full speeches, instead of just the sound bites, I think you’ll find it very difficult to dispute his intelligence and speaking skills.
