They are working on bugs that crap hydrocarbons. But they are not as far as long as this describes.
I believe the story has confounded a few things and actually is mostly a story about cellulosic ethanol. The listed feedstocks, mention of sugar, stage of development, price, and the players involved indicate this is a cellulosic ethanol venture.
More power to them, regardless.
One dirty little secret about some of the ethanol processes. They can make it from coal. That doesn’t help the US with environmentalist gestalt that is our government. But China and India have substantial coal reserves. And hopefully they can take pressure off world demand. |

Of course, this still won’t sate the rabid environmentalists. After all, this new oil still has to be combusted in engines releasing carbon dioxide.
Maybe next they can invent something that takes carbon dioxide and turns it into oxygen.
They can call it a "tree." |
