He doesn’t need a Sista Souljah moment. Liberals are just racists. Republicans would do well to point that out and make a play for voters who hate race-baiting. |

This is an attempt to put words in the Right’s mouth so that they can properly rail against the Racists Right.
All they need is a few people on the Right to admit they got chuckle out of it or even defend it out of a sense of free speech, and that be enough in the Left’s mind to transfer ownership of this artwork to the Right.
Its been frustrating for them. They want to lord their alleged non-racist moral superiority over the Right. But like was said, pretty much the best the Left has to complain about are some chain letters. That is how they see the Presidential Race in their minds. Not a contest of merit or positions. On that front, they are probably getting an inkling of buyer’s remorse. |

What kind of overly sensitive, self-important, humorless bastard would react with unreasoning rage to a satirical cartoon?

Hmm I wonder how the left would react if say The New Yorker had put McCain on its cover with a swastika on his arm.
Most likely they would be screaming about freedom of the press, yada yada.
As usual they want to have it both ways as long as it helps them. |

Presumably the New Yorker readership is sophisticated enough to get the joke, but still: this is going to upset a lot of people Translation: We are not sophisticated.

Aw, heck. You beat me to it. Of course that ain’t difficult since I am so slow and unsophisticated. It must be tough being one of those sophisticated, super-smart New Yorker readers, always having to watch what you say or write lest it fall into the wrong hands and be misused by unsophisticated right-wing yahoos. |

In the end, the reason any humor, particularly satire, works, is because there’s a grain of truth at the center of it. The level of anger coming from Camp Obama on this thing indicates they think so, too. |

From Americablog: "Is the New Yorker so out of touch..."
Well, at least their humor has been. I’m not a huge reader of the magazine, but I can’t remember the last time I saw a reprint of one of their humorous drawings and both saw the humor in the picture and found it funny.
But maybe that’s just because I too am part of the unwashed masses that will take this satire as truth. Oh, well. Maybe I’ll just go back to clinging to my guns... |

But maybe that’s just because I too am part of the unwashed masses that will take this satire as truth. This is what I find to be the most offensive sentiment — i.e. that only the New York liberal elite and their fellow travelers have the right amount of sense and intelligence to get the joke. Judging from the comments here, I’m not the only one.
Heck, even Andrew Sullivan thinks the liberal outrage is condescending:It sure has buzz. But if my email in-tray is any indicator of anything, it isn’t good. I still see it as satire, and the notion that most Americans are incapable of seeing that strikes me as excessively paranoid and a little condescending. |

Okay. No doubt that there are some die-hard righties out there passing along emails about Obama being a secret Muslim, and probably some other stuff. But where exactly are most of these rumors coming from? Oh yeah, the left:This makes the third bigoted attack from the Left on Obama. Two weeks ago, it was Ralph Nader acting as the arbiter of black authenticity, and last week it was Jesse Jackson wanting to castrate Obama. One side in this cycle certainly seems obsessed by identity politics, but so far it isn’t the Republicans. How do you follow? You wrote, "No doubt that there are some die-hard righties out there passing along emails about Obama being a secret Muslim, and probably some other stuff." Then you state that most of these "rumors" are coming from the Left. And you site Hot Air bringing up Jackson and Nader, both of whom made no reference to Muslim or anywhere near. Those dots just don’t connect.
Do you really believe that the 12% or so of the people out there that believe Obama to be a Muslim have generated their misconceptions through rumors from the Left!?!
I don’t think so. |

Those dots just don’t connect. The dots connect just fine, Pogue. They just don’t draw the picture you want to see.Do you really believe that the 12% or so of the people out there that believe Obama to be a Muslim have generated their misconceptions through rumors from the Left!?! First of all, I have no idea if that’s even true. Secondly, how many of those people who believe Obama is a Muslim are Muslims themselves — you know, the ones who understand that when Obama was born he was a Muslim?
As for the rest, if you had paid any attention at all to the Democratic Primary race you’d know how silly your question is. |

You really didn’t pay much attention to the Democratic primaries, did you Pogue? Show me.
Besides, what does any of that have to do with Jackson or Nader from the Hot Air reference??
How could anyone point to that as proof that "most of these rumors" are coming from the Left??? Surely if what is being portrayed is true, there would be something better than the recent Nader/Jackson racial idiocy. Yes?
Not enough dots in this picture. |

Good thing too, Michael. ‘Cus you would suck at it. ‘Cus with this extremely weak connection, you ain’t educating anyone.
Your idea of demonstrating that “where exactly most of these rumors come from” is linking a Hot Air site of Jackson and Nader making anything but references to Obama being a Muslim.
And McQ, I find it strange that I’m the one “sipping kool-aid” simply because I don’t see a connection between Jackson and Nader and “most of these rumors”. Maybe this “rumors were rampant among Clinton Democrats” is true, but the Nader/Jackson thingie certainly doesn’t demonstrate it. Is it too much to ask that if you make the accusation, you would have something substantial to back it up? And the Nader/Jackson episode clearly doesn’t demonstrate that at all.
All you have to do is explain to me how the Nader/Jackson reference has anything to do with “most of these rumors” about Obama being a Muslim. You won’t bother though because it’s a p!ss poor reference. It has absolutely nothing to do with rumors about Obama being a secret Muslim.
And I have to wonder why you would site it. It’s obvious to anyone that the Nader/Jackson reference has nothing to do with rumors of Obama being a secret Muslim. Do you have anything else?
If not, then that could easily be considered to be nothing more than rumors about rumors. |

Then again, a lot of us have concluded you’re beyond educating, so I suppose that’s understandable. Your idea of demonstrating that “where exactly most of these rumors come from” is linking a Hot Air site of Jackson and Nader making anything but references to Obama being a Muslim. Well, that’s rich coming from the same band of idiots who gave us "October surprise’ and "Bush lied kids died". Funny how when it attacks Bush you don’t require nearly the proof.

Funny how when it attacks Bush you don’t require nearly the proof. So Bithead, I take it you can’t connect the Jackson/Nader reference either. But if you think you can, then I’m all eyes. You’re apparently unaware of (and I doubt that) or ignoring what happened among Clinton Dems during the primary. If it is the latter, then, at least to me, that’s willful ignorance which is usually characterized as "sipping the kool aid". I’m well aware of the Clinton camp and their supporters spreading falsehoods about Obama, his positions, and his history. I have no doubt that there were Clinton factions out there either helping to spread rumors about Obama’s religion or at least doing nothing to discourage those rumors. I’m not here to defend the Left or soften its image. I actually have nothing to quarrel about with Michael’s main point in his post – that the Leftoshpere is in a tizzy regarding the New Yorker cover art. Then again, the Leftoshpere tizzies perpetually.
I only seek to question Michael’s belief that “most of these rumors” about Obama being a secret Muslim is coming from the Left. And I simply don’t see a connection from the Jackson/Nader episode that would help him in that belief. As you know, or maybe you are willfully ignoring the fact, that the Jackson/Nader episode has nothing to do with rumors about Obama being a secret Muslim. Now there is plenty to chew on with that episode and the Left’s fealty to identity politics, but there is no meat on that bone about Obama being a secret Muslim.
I personally believe that “most” of those specific rumors did not originate from the Left. And you see, I already worked my google like a heavy bag before my first comment. I did several searches with keywords like “Obama” “rumors” “secret muslim” “left” “liberal” “democrats” in all of its forms and variations and I came up with very little. And from this post, the only thing given to demonstrate this belief that most of the origins of that rumor came from the Left, is an irrelevant episode involving Jackson wanting to castrate Obama for talking down to black people and Nader accusing Obama of not having the “helping the poor, downtrodden black folks beaten by the Man” bona fides.
Now maybe you can work your google heavy bag better than I. And if you, Michael, bithead, or anyone else cares to back up this claim that most of the rumors about Obama being a secret Muslim originates with the Left, then I’ll be willing to concede the idea. But if all that is presented is an irrelevant episode starring Jesse Jackson and Ralph Nader saying anything but Obama is a secret Muslim, then I’m afraid my criticism stands.
I did find a few questionable items. Including this Washington Times based website:Hillary’s team has questions about Obama’s Muslim background But MediaMatters does a reasonable job of undressing that claim down to a scant reasonable doubt.Summary: Melanie Morgan, Lee Rodgers, Rush Limbaugh, and John Gibson all forwarded the accusation made by a website controlled by Rev. Sun Myung Moon that Sen. Hillary Clinton was responsible for spreading information linking Sen. Barack Obama to a madrassa, or Muslim school. None of the four cited any evidence, other than the article, that Clinton was responsible for promoting the madrassa story, and the article cited no one by name. I also found this and this. And one could go on about how Right wing commentators are the ones excited about this rumor all over cable news, radio, and the internet.
Bottom line is, like Politico suggests, there is no way to decipher where “most” of these rumors originate from.
And certainly the Jackson/Nader episode does nothing to help.
Cheers. |

Why sure. Who else would they be listening to during the primary? I mean, come on, Pouge... It’s all a right wing conspiracy, huh?
Also, I think your mislabeling these as "misconceptions" to be a trifle one-sided at least. THere’s certainly enough in his history... even his recent history to suggest that he has a special sympathy in that area.
