Indications of the phenomenon were pointed out by those who noted that the "big 3" of network news were trailing Obama and breathlessly reporting on his trip to Europe and the Middle East while essentially ignoring McCain's similar trip. It appears the American public has picked up on that as well: The belief that reporters are trying to help Barack Obama win the fall campaign has grown by five percentage points over the past month. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey found that 49% of voters believe most reporters will try to help Obama with their coverage, up from 44% a month ago.Although we've talked about bias in the media before, I find it hard to believe any human being, regardless of how hard they try, can fully keep their biases out of what they say and do. That's not to make excuses for or condone it, it's simply an opinion based in years of observation. The purpose of saying it is to acknowledge the existence of bias in reporting and to say we should learn to recognize it and filter it from the reporting if possible. In this election, at least if the perception is to be believed, the bias is toward Obama: A plurality of Democrats—37%— say most reporters try to offer unbiased coverage of the campaign. Twenty-seven percent (27%) believe most reporters are trying to help Obama and 21% in Obama’s party think reporters are trying to help McCain.Obviously there are a number of Dems and Reps who are going to believe whatever is written or reported in biased. But I think it is interesting to note that even among Dems, 27% think reporters are trying to aid Obama. Interesting info, especially in a realm were perception is often times reality.
