Posted by: McQ on Tuesday, September 09, 2008 When all was smooth sailing, Barack Obama - a product of Chicago machine politics - decided to indulge himself and claim to be a "new politician" who had risen above the partisan divide and didn't have to lower himself into the gutter of the political past. And so, confident they just wouldn't be needed with the coronation parade going as planned, he waved off 527s. However now that the political seas have turned a bit stormy that "new politician", "post-partisan" crap gets quickly tossed over the side: ...[A]fter a year of telling donors not to contribute to 527 groups, of encouraging strategists not to form them and of suggesting that outside messaging efforts would not be welcome in Obama's Democratic Party, Obama's strategists have changed their approach.The change? "Hey, come on down!" The Obama campaign can't ask donors to form outside groups; it can only communicate, through the public and the media, with body language, tells and hints.And Ambinder gladly complies. So much for that bit of political hubris. Gone the way of the promise to accept federal matching funds (and no I'm not endorsing or condoning them) if he was his party's candidate for president. New politician indeed. |
