Johnny Carson
Posted by: McQ on Sunday, January 23, 2005

I remember one of the great thrills of my young life was sneaking out of bed and watching Johnny Carson. The guests, the monologue, the fun of assembled ensemble. I'll never forget Carnak and some of the other goofy stuff the guy did. He had the ability to make humor that missed and bad writing funny.

Johnny Carson died today.

I'll miss him.

A mainstay in my house for as long as I can remember. The consummate showman, epitome of a gentleman, and the true "King of Latenight".

The value of the entertainment industry - and indeed, humanity - sustained a sharp decrease today.

Farewell, Mr. Carson.

And the ability to take the strange, unscripted, and sometimes embarrassing things that happened and meld them seamlessly into the show.

He didn't invent the genre, but he came pretty close to perfecting it.

One of Doc Severinsen's albums with The Tonight Show Band is called "Once More With Feeling." Wouldn't it be great if NBC were to honor Carson with a special one night this week? They could fill three hours easily enough, and I'd watch all three. But I'd settle for one.

Can the blogosphere make that happen?
