Anyone who claims "we won" in Iraq is being ridiculous. The war has cost the US immensely, meant the lives of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and has yielded us no benefits whatsoever. We have a lot of returning vets with PTSD, we have broken families, we’ve spent over a trillion, and we’ve weakened our world position immensely. But won? Nope, we’ve won nothing. The war is as a worse diaster than the pointless Vietnam fiasco — and the public knows that, that’s why every time McCain mentioned Iraq in the debates the meter went down as people disapproved. People are 70% against the war because they know it was a stupid, pointless waste of life, money and resources. An utter waste.
But in Iraq people are not better off. Maliki is close to the Iranians (and really, the Iranians have come out of this on top), the Iranians control numerous militias, and people in Shi’ite dominated areas are governed by Islamic law more limiting of freedom than Saddam’s was. Sunni tribes run their region, and Kurdistan was autonomous long before Saddam fell from power. The Iraqis have a lot more orphans, and there has been massive ethnic cleansing, thanks to our aggression.
Not only that, but the goal was to pressure other states in the region, to create a model democracy, and the Bush administration hoped for a close pro-American ally with permanent bases. Now Iraqi sentiment is strongly anti-American, they want us out quickly, and they’ve made clear their friendship with Iran. There is no way anyone can say we "won," that is absurd. I’m just heartened that the country has turned against militarism, and we’re not likely to cause so much pain and evil again any time soon. The Iraq "syndrome" will be stronger than the Vietnam syndrome because it’s done our country more damage than Vietnam did. We acted like an aggressive bully, and now we’re paying the price. To claim we won is dishonest. But luckily, some of us are in a position to make sure that lie isn’t believed. |

meant the lives of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis We’ll just stop with the first "fact" you mention, which is, as usual the first outright lie in your post. A figure fabricated on the assumption that not a single early death occued in Iraq before the US invaded (save the ones caused by our coalition) and a claim that anyone that left their house since 2003 was killed by the US.
Unfortunately, Erb, youve been using your position to lie to students that don’t know realize how worthless your teachings are. You’ve been peddling them lies about the 1991 invasion for so long that no facts are allowed to change the ultimate path of your narrative. Their only hope is that they meet someone with some real world experience and basic knowledge of how the what being a leader means before too much of their lives are wasted. |

Erb is right; Saddam was much better than the current government in Iraq. OK, so he gassed some people and his sons ran some rape rooms and torture cells; that’s a small evil compared to Bush’s lies . . . |

Don, please tell me you are being sarcastic? Are you kidding me? Rape rooms and torture cells are small evils compared to Bush’s lies? What lies? About Iraq having WMD? C’mon, people LOVED Bush and all he stood for after the bombing and invasion of Iraq after 9/11. You were probably cheering in your lounge chair as they reported it on the news, just like EVERY American did. You must be thrilled with the incompetent, inexperience of our illuminati left wing President elect I’m assuming?! |
