It has sort of been an SSDD week for news. Nothing earth-shattering or ground breaking in particular. Tax day came and went. Tea Parties convened and protested. Democrats seem ready to again ignore jobs and the economy to push their favorite ideological agenda items. And unemployment was “unexpectedly” higher. Same Stuff Different Day.

So, we’ll talk a little about unemployment, a little on what in the world the Democrat political strategy is in all of this, maybe why Bill Clinton is so darn sure the Republicans won’t take back either chamber of Congress this fall (but will blow up another federal building … or something) and, if we have time, touch on Obama’s foreign policy as it pertains to Iran and Israel (or the NYT/Gates claim that he really doesn’t have one for Iran … or for that matter, Israel).

Unemployment – Will it improve or are we looking a a permanent loss of some jobs?

Nuclear treaty – Good for the US or a give-away

Israel – What’s up with our relationship there?

What’s with all the demonization: The charges against the Tea Party in DC seem to be unsubstantiated and the Democrats now seem to have actually tried to provoke what they claimed happened. What do Democrats hope to earn with this continued attempt to smear the Tea Partiers and is it possible that continuing on this path of insulting their constituents might have very bad consequences for them electorally in November. Do they even care anymore?

Employment numbers and the economy: Some positive numbers in the employment numbers but are they really a positive sign that the bleak unemployment situation is turning around?

About those poll numbers: Polls continue to be taken and they show a steady erosion of support for the recently signed health care reform law. Polls also show a steady decline of support for Democrats from independents, eroding job approval numbers for the president and expanding numbers of people who think the country is on the wrong track. However, a recent poll shows that the people aren’t all that thrilled with the GOP either. Does this portend trouble for Republicans in November as well?

The new health care law: Unintended consequences already popping up? And, as Chuck Schumer predicts, will this be a winner in November for the Democrats?

US credit: Moody’s is warning of a downgrade in our country’s credit rating if we don’t commit to some pretty drastic changes. Treasury bonds didn’t sell well this week. Meanwhile we’ve enacted a massive new entitlement and Social Security is now officially in the red. What does it all mean?

Fear and anger: Is it real? Is it as real as the Democrats would have you believe?

Subject(s):

The heath care reform debacle: Why are the Democrats pulling out all the stops to pass this monstrosity? It seems as if they could save themselves in November and get a bi-partisan health care reform package passed (GOP seems willing) if they’d start from scratch. What else is going on here?

Coffee parties, pseudo-rights and salt bans: Is government “the answer”? Is nannyism getting out of control? Is a “right” whatever we decide it is?

Global warming: If your data base essentially ignores the Southern Hemisphere, can you really claim your statistical findings refelct a global phenomenon?

Subject(s):

Health Care Reform – where is it, what was the Obama proposal all about and will they deliver it to Obama’s desk by Easter as he’s requested.

Economy – Unemployment numbers (U-3, U-6) are contradictory. The Obama administration claims that it is a glimmer of hope.  Is it really getting better out there? Or are we having sunshine piped up our skirt?

Foreign Policy – Clinton’s tour of South America has Argentina claiming a diplomatic coup while the UK is mad as hell at us and Brazil refusing to play along on a Security Council vote for Iranian sanctions. Then today we learn that Syria is mocking the US’s “engagement” policy. Does this administration have a coherent foreign policy?

Obama I or Bush III?: Well let’s see, GITMO is still open, Iraq proceeds as planned, we’re surging in Afghanistan and, oh, the Democratic House just passed a one year extension to the Patriot Act.

Health Care Summit: Did the Democrats accomplish what they’d plan? How’d Obama come off? Were you surprised by the Republicans?

The Goracle surfaces
: He’s back in an NYT op-ed and he’s trying to justify the “science” to get to the real reason for the alarmism – cap-and-trade.

Health Care Reform: Forget reconciliation, forget the summit – does Nancy Pelosi have the votes in the House to pass the Senate bill into law?

Gun rights: Washington State’s Supreme Court says the 2nd Amendment is incorporated by the 14th Amendment and applies to the state. They also cite Heller deciding the 2nd Amendment is an individual right. I wonder what the “collective rights” folks think of that?

Greece, Europe and the Future: What does the meltdown in Greece mean for Europe? Will they leave the EU? Will they be forced out? And isn’t this similar to, oh, I don’t know, California and the US?

The Mt. Vernon Statement: A reconstructed “Constitutional Conservatism” or the same-old-same-old?

Subject(s):

Republicans: Are they going to go to the health care summit? And what about the “bi-partisan” jobs bill the put together. Do they still not “get it”?

Economy/Economics: Would China flex its economic muscle by selling a few billion in bonds to make a point? And what about Greece and the EU? What does that foretell for the US and the world? Are we really in a recovery?

Global Warming: An amazing interview with Dr. Phil Jones seems to indicate the beginning of a bit of a walkback.

The Super-Bowl Half-Time (or blowout) Podcast

Subject(s):

Unemployment: What are the real numbers? Will it pick up or are we, as many fear, in a jobless recovery? Or are we in a recovery at all?

Tea Party Convention: Birthers and profit and Palin, oh my! Is the movement being co-opted? Is it a true populist movement?

China: Is the rhetoric heating up? Do they feel they have us over a barrel and now’s the time to assert themselves? Can they be counted on to support tougher sanctions on Iran?
